Botanical Garden:
Arboretum
The arboretum (Lat. arbor = a tree), maintained in the
character of a recreation park, includes both native and foreign
species of trees and shrubs. Three geographic groups, i.e.
North-American, east-Asian and Caucasian, can be distinguished here.
You can find a fragment of deciduous forest with the Bladder Nut, a
species under protection in Poland, Pontic Azalea and Wild Service.
Among the Polish rarities is the Golden Larch, which grows near the
pond. The trioecious Wingnut from the Caucasus is a beautiful
specimen. In the neighbourhood there are Hickories Pecans, with their
extraordinary bark that comes off, and the American Chestnut. In the
autumn season, when leaves change their colours, the Sour and Sweet
Gums look particularly picturesque. The main lane in the eastern
margins of the Garden is embellished with rhododendron bushes, most
attractive in the spring when they are in blossom. Coniferous trees,
including the little known plum-yew, cedar and Microbiota, compose a
dense evergreen clump. The petrified tree stem of the type Dadoxylon,
over 250 mln years old, is also remarkable.
