World class surgeons meet in Wroclaw again

World-class surgeons will meet at the 3rd Conference of przypadkimedyczne.pl in Wroclaw, among others, Prof. Maria Siemionow and Prof. Adam Maciejewski, both the authors of successful face transplants.

The conference branded by the portal and publishing house przypadkimedyczne.pl will be held in Wroclaw for the third time. The portal was started in 2009 by the then medical student Mateusz Palczewski. It is a specialized platform for the exchange of information on both diagnosis and treatment of extraordinary, unusual cases of diseases. Such form of gaining experience can't replace traditional methods of training doctors, it is only to supplement it. The website became popular quickly. Today, it has over 12 000 registered users of different medical specialities.

In addition to the portal, Przypadki Medyczne established a publishing house, which is officially registered by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The regular scientific conferences are an important event; coming to Wroclaw in October at the invitation of young enthusiasts of medicine are eminent doctors.

Special guests will be Prof. Maria Siemionow and Prof. Adam Maciejewski. Prof. Siemonow graduated from the Poznan Medical Academy, and has been working in the United States for years. In 2008, she made a face transplant in a woman, the first such operation in the US and fourth in the world. It included up to 80 percent of the face, the largest area so far in treatments of this type.

On the other hand, in 2013 Prof. Adam Maciejewski, a surgeon with the Gliwice Oncology Centre, made the first-ever, life-saving face transplant, where the material was taken from a deceased donor. In the same year he also carried out a face transplant in a young woman with Recklinghausen syndrome, which deforms the face in a life-threatening way. 'It will be a meeting featuring world-class specialists, and an interesting exchange of experiences,' says Mateusz Palczewski.

But that's not the end of the list of guests with outstanding achievements. To speak during the Wroclaw conference is also Dr. Anna Chrapusta from Krakow, specializing in microsurgery, and Dr. Adam Domanasiewicz, transplantologist, associated for years with the Trzebnica transplant centre and recently working at the Wroclaw University Clinical Hospital. Among the speakers is also an excellent paediatric surgeon, Prof. Dariusz Patkowski.

The conference, scheduled for October 8, is intended for medical students and practicing physicians; for paying participants only.
