As many as 74 uniforms of Polish soldiers, 46 hats and headgear used by the military from regaining independence to the present day can be seen at the exhibition 'Polish Soldier's Uniform' in the Wroclaw Arsenal. This is the first ever presentation of the uniforms from the collection of the Military Museum. The exhibition is open until March 20, 2016.

'Soon, on August 15, we will celebrate the 95th anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw, i.e. the Miracle on the Vistula and the Polish Army Day. This is an opportunity to see how the Polish uniform had been changing over the years' said Dr. Maciej Łagiewski, director of the City Museum in Wroclaw. 'In the past, the uniforms were more representative, today there are simplified. At the exhibition, one can also trace the evolution of the four-cornered cap, called 'czworogranna.' Once, it was worn by soldiers of almost all formations, from lancers to nineteenth-century insurgents. It returned to the Polish armed forces after regaining independence' says director Łagiewski.

The earliest exhibit on display is the coat pattern no. 19, introduced with the 'Polish Army Field Dress Code from 1919, and the latest - a field uniform jacket in desert camouflage used by Lt.-Col. Artur Domański in the stabilization mission in Iraq during the period between July 2004 and February 2005.

'The uniforms assigned to specific people are watched with the greatest interest, which is why we have labelled their owners' explains Dr. Łagiewski. 'Many of them are gifts from the soldiers at rest, as well as their families.'

'The Horn Owls of Lviv' (Lwowskie Puchacze) in the Battle of Britain

The most valuable on display, and at the same time almost fully complete, are the uniforms of Polish pilots who fought in the Polish Air Force in Britain, bought by the Museum in 2015. RAF uniforms have double marking - Polish and British. 'Tabs on collars bear Polish ranks, and sleeves bear British' demonstrates Dr. Cieśla. Exhibited are, among others, a coat by navigator Cpt. Stanisław Sadowski of 307. Night Fighter Squadron 'The Horn Owls of Lviv.'

A complete uniform is one that consists of a cap, shirt, jacket, trousers and shoes. RAF airmen received uniform suitcases labelled 'Polish Air Forces.' You can see one of these at the exhibition' says Dr. Mariusz Cieśla, curator of the exhibition and director of the Military Museum.

Presented are also uniforms of Polish soldiers who fought in World War II in the British army. The famous battle-dress labelled 'Poland' on the right and left arm, as well as uniforms of the II Corpse, marked with a shield with a cross. 'They were worn by the soldiers who fought at Monte Cassino' says Dr. Cieśla.

Rain, camouflage, camo

The exhibition also presents uniforms of Polish soldiers who served in the Polish People's Army. 'No need to be an expert on tailoring materials. You can see at first glance that these uniforms are of inferior quality' demonstrates Dr. Cieśla.

You can also look up close the uniforms of generals whose service was associated with the Wroclaw garrison. The collection includes, among others, a dress uniform of Major General Jan Kuriata, commander of the Silesian Military District, and the dress uniform of Brigadier General Leszek Kozłowski, commandant-rector of the Higher Military School of Mechanized Armed Forces in Wroclaw, nicknamed 'Zmech'.

'There are also the recently used field uniforms patterned with the so called 'rain', camo, puma, or camouflage used since 1993 to this day,' says Dr. Cieśla. 'This exhibition is a short monograph of the Polish uniform. All the uniforms come from our collection.'

The exhibition is supplemented with a presentation of badges of military schools and units, from the interwar period until today.
