Witkacy's works on display in "Zamek"

As many as 12 pastels by Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz, aka Witkacy, and 10 photographs and 12 postcards written by the famous artist will be available from August to the end of October at the Cultural Centre "Zamek."

All exhibits relate to the person of Eugenia Wyszomirska, the woman Witkacy met by chance in Warsaw and became captivated by her asymmetrical face to such an extent, that he painted approx. 100 portraits of her.

The first time Witkacy saw her was in Warsaw, in ul. Nowy Świat. The year was 1933, and the famous artist then recorded the words: "I burn with the desire to draw her Asymmetry." He accomplished the desire immediately, because he offered to portrait the surprised woman even in the street. The choice of this particular model was not accidental, given her resemblance to Jadwiga Janczewska, the artist's fiancée, who committed suicide in 1914. In the following years, Eugenia Wyszomirska (nee Sikora) was portrayed by Witkiewicz as many as to 100 times, but only 26 works have survived to the day. We will see 12 of them, brought in specially from the Museum of the History of Katowice. This is a treat not only for enthusiasts of Witkiewicz, but of art in general. 'Pastels are extremely sensitive to weather conditions, and therefore less likely to travel and be shown in different places,' points out Anna Baster, curator of the exhibition "The Asymmetric Lady." In addition to pastels, the exhibition will present 10 photographs in which Eugenia Wyszomirska was immortalized by Witkiewicz, or in which she is with a larger group of friends, sightseeing Zakopane.

Thanks to Witkacy, Eugenia Wyszomirska not only fell in love with the winter capital of Poland, but changed her lifestyle as well, befriending with the local bohemia. She divorced Wladyslaw Wyszomirski and married Jozef Stopka in Zakopane, and then again re-married, this time Walerian Kuznicki. After the war, she didn't quit on her new passions. She run a photo atelier and promoted the work of Witkiewicz with the portraits she owned, having donating them posthumously to the Museum of the History of Katowice (26 portraits). A part of this collection (12 works) will be exhibited in the Cultural Centre "Zamek." In addition to pastels and photographs, we will see 12 postcards that Witkacy wrote to Eugenia.

The exhibition is accompanied by many events, and the highlight will be a lecture by an eminent Polish Witkacy expert, Professor Janusz Degler, on women in the life and work of Witkiewicz (16 September at 6 pm).
