In the Royal Palace, there will be an opportunity to see paintings by 19th-century artists collected by Joachim Heinrich Wilhelm Wagener and then granted by him to the National Gallery in Berlin.

It is going to be a fantastic beginning of autumn. Apart from an exhibition of modern painting in the Four Domes Pavilion, we can see paintings by 19th-century artists collected by Joachim Heinrich Wilhelm Wagener and then granted to the National Gallery in Berlin also for half a year, but this time in the Royal Palace. The exhibition will be open from 18th September till 15th January.

What attractions can visitors expect? The leitmotiv is the art of Romanticism and the biedermeier period, and Wroclaw inhabitants and foreign tourists will have an opportunity to see firsthand paintings by masters from Germany, Belgium, Italy and Netherlands: Karl Friedrich Schinkel (an architect of Berlin and a painter), Gustav Grunewald (student of Caspar David Friedrich), Peter von Cornelius (an academic fascinated with Italian Renaissance masters), Theodor Gudin (a master of paintings with marine themes), Domenic Quaglio (an excellent master of vedute paintings), Giovanni Migliara, as well as ‘Finis Poloniae’ – a well-known painting by Dietrich Monten, or works by artists connected with Wroclaw – Karl Friedrich Lessing, Heinrich Mücke and August Kopisch. All paintings are part of a legendary collection of Joachim Heinrich Wilhelm Wagener, who collected works of art by his contemporary painters (until 1861). Shortly before his death, he decided to grant his 262 paintings to the National Gallery in Berlin, and his collection became the basis of a much larger one.

In the Wroclaw Royal Palace, we will see 67 works of art borrowed from Berlin for half a year – which is a significant event, because works of this class travel rarely and their presentation abroad is always special. The curator of the exhibition ‘Masterpieces of painting from the National Gallery in Berlin. Joachim Wagener’s collection’ is dr Birgit Verwiebe. A special catalogue issued on this occasion will be available for purchase in the Royal Palace.
