Underwater monsters at Hydropolis

An interactive catalogue of deep-sea organisms is but one of many attractions at Wroclaw\'s Hydropolis

>Visitors to the Głębiny [Depths] area are in for a view that is both blood-curdling and intriguing. "Sea depths conceal a lot of mysteries, and the Hydropolis features the most intriguing. We can elucidate on phenomena such as hydrothermal vents and bioluminescence. We can also help you to explore underwater wrecks. Only recently, we have also been showcasing a number of underwater monsters," says Hydropolis Spokesman Rafał Zagrobelny. "The installation uses a variety of multimedia, but the most prominent part of it features life-size models of peculiar and sometimes terrifying creatures. Mysterious fish and other deep-sea creatures are showcased in acrylic glass cylinders using special illuminated effects. Visitors can examine them in painstaking detail. The screen features unique video materials registered at enormous depths by specially designed robots. "One of such peculiar creature is Caulophryne Pelagica. Some people call it an anglerfish. The fish hunts with a characteristic growth on its head that produces light and lures smaller fish into its mouth," says Mr Zagrobelny. In the very centre of the Hydropolis stands an installation that showcases marine transport. An interactive screen allows the visitors to explore a variety of cargo, passenger and war craft from different times and ages. Each presentation is accompanied by a suitable description. "We will show you "Syracusia", the largest craft of the Antiquity, which had a garden and a warm swimming pool," says Hydropolis Spokesman. The second part of the exhibit showcases in a spectacular way the movement of the craft across the oceans. With GPS systems, it is now possible to follow each and every craft. The resulting animations shows how the oceans and the seas have evolved into a highway. You can enjoy the animation in the Historia Inżynierii Wodnej [Water Engineering History] area.

The exhibition has recently been extended with an installation in the City and Water zone. "Our goal is to showcase the activity of the Municipal Water and Sewage Company. The installation looks like a cross section of a pipe. One section shows how clean water is produced, the other showcases sewage treatment processes in Wroclaw," explains Rafał Zagrobelny. Where does Wroclaw obtain water from, what are water treatment processes, and what is activated sludge? You can explore these and many more questions at the Hydropolis.
