Take your daughter to the gynaecologist's

Unique in the region, a gynaecology centre to offer medical care to young female patients is being developed in ul. Chałubińskiego in Wroclaw. Victims of sexual abuse will gain access to round-the-clock medical care as well. There is no other centre of this kind in Lower Silesia. However, the centre needs money to purchase specialist equipment, especially ultrasound imaging tools.

The Transregional Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology Centre (Ponadregionalne Centrum Ginekologii Dziewczęcej ) is being developed at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinic of the Medical University in Wroclaw (SPSK1 Hospital) at ul. Chałubińskiego 3. The centre will offer treatment and medical care to children and adolescents with a variety of gynaecological conditions. While the centre will run a gynaecology outpatient clinic for girls, the emergencies will also be examined round the clock.

"We have already launched the outpatient clinic, and the remaining sections of the centre will be up and running within a month or two, once the renovation of our premises comes to an end," says Professor Lidia Hirnle, Head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinic at the Medical University in Wroclaw (I Klinika Ginekologii i Położnictwa UM we Wrocławiu). The gynaecological office adapted to meet the needs of adolescent female patients is located at the ground floor, and the remaining premises are to be found a floor above. The clinic representatives are planning to provide a separate waiting room for children.

Ultrasound imaging for the youngest

"We are going to focus on prevention programmes to benefit our youngest patients. The clinic will provide screening tests. We would like to encourage mothers to visit the gynaecologist's with both little and adolescent daughters. We can provide non-invasive abdominal ultra-sound tests to preschool and early school female patients, without resorting to colposcopy," explains Professor Lidia Hirnle.

The centre will provide screening tests which allow for the early detection of uterus malformations, endometriosis or pelvic tumours, which may lead to infertility in the future.

Small female patients will be operated on and hospitalised on the spot. The centre will also provide consultations to girls after radio- and chemotherapy treated at haematology wards and to young female patients from surgical, endocrinology and psychiatric wards (anorexia, bulimia, obesity)

Female doctors to help small female patients

The Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology Centre will also provide care to victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence. Professor Lidia Hirnle assures that the centre will be collaborating with the police to address all the drastic cases of domestic violence or child abuse.

To reduce stress in their patients, the team will consist mainly of female doctors. The centre is going to collaborate with surgeons, urologists and endocrinologists, all of them specialised in paediatrics. When needed, the team will be also able to find support from children's psychologists affiliated with the clinic.

However, the head of the clinic admits that in order to run properly, the centre needs a lump sum of over 400 thousand PLN for specialist equipment, including ultra-sound imaging, colposcopy and laparoscopy tools. Part of the funds for equipment were collected at the XIII Charity Ball organised by Anna and Rafał Dutkiewicz. 15% of the funds collected in the event has been allocated` to support the Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology Centre in Wroclaw.
