New Year’s Eve for classical music fans

Where to spend New Year’s Eve if you are a classical music fan or you simply love Vienna music and Strauss waltzes? This year the Wroclaw Opera House has chosen a sure bet – 'The Bat' by Strauss, and the Wroclaw Philharmonic Hall will offer hits of 19th-century symphony music and the New Year’s concert in the Centennial Hall.

Night at the Opera

The last New Year’s Eve in the Wroclaw Opera House was quite pompous because it was combined with the premiere of the ballet ‘Coppelia’ with picturesque choreography by Georgio Madia. This year, at the beginning of Carnival, an extremely popular and proven hit returns to the repertoire – namely, ‘The Bat’, an operetta by Johann Strauss with immortal hits directed by Helena Kaut-Howson.For which dates are tickets still available? There are still around 250 available tickets for Tuesday the 30th of December, so here you can take your time. However, if you plan to visit the Opera House on New Year’s Eve, you shouldn’t hesitate too long. During the performance break, a traditional champagne toast is planned. Tickets cost PLN 50-250 (30th of December) and PLN 50-300 (31st of December).

Fireworks with a symphony orchestra

New Year’s Eve in the Wroclaw Philharmonic Hall attracts one of the largest crowds of classical music fans on that occasion. Concerts take place on the 30th and 31st of December and are usually sold out, so it was often necessary to register for a reserve list. This year will not be different. The first tickets were sold shortly after the summer holiday. For the time being, the concert on the 30th of December is completely sold out. There are still several tickets available for the 31st of December at 6:00 p.m., but classical music fans should rather opt for the concert at 8:30 p.m. – tickets are still available there, too. Tickets for New Year’s Eve in the Philharmonic Hall cost PLN 120-200. What will the programme include? First of all, dances from masterpieces such as ‘Swan Lake’ by Piotr Tchaikovsky, ‘Peer Gynt’ by Edvard Grieg or Hungarian dances by Johannes Brahms. The National Music Forum Orchestra will be conducted by George Tchitchinadze.

New Year’s gala in the Centennial Hall

If you are willing to prolong the festive atmosphere of celebration for a few days, you will certainly like the New Year’s gala of the National Music Forum that will be held in the Centennial Hall on the 3rd of January 2015. During the previous gala held in January this year, the Hall was filled to capacity, and the upcoming event should also be a hit. The organisers seem to have taken heed of critical opinions about the failed choice of hosts (e.g., the actor Robert Gonera) at this year’s gala, as they have chosen tried-and-true names for the next year’s event. The main master of ceremony will be Professor Jan Miodek – a well-known linguist famous for his eloquence and sense of humour. The performers will include George Tchitchinadze as conductor of the National Music Forum Orchestra, as well as soloists: soprano Marika Machitidze and baritone Marcin Bronikowski. They will sing, among others, the famous duet ‘Mouth is shut when the soul sings’ from ‘The Merry Widow’ by Franz Lehàr, the Toreador’s aria from ‘Carmen’ by George Bizet and Musetta’s waltz from ‘La bohème’ by Giacomo Puccini.Tickets cost PLN 25-200 and are still available in all categories.
