  3. New bike lane at Powstańców Śląskich

A new bike lane between ul. Wielka and Pl. Powstańców Śląskich has already been put to use. It is much safer and more comfortable. Until now, cyclists have used a marked lane on the pavement.

“That lane was not very comfortable”, admits Dorota, who travels by bike to the city centre. “The pavement slabs on which I had to move were uneven here and there, which was quite stressful in connection with thin tyres in my bike”, she adds.

Problems were caused also by pedestrians, who recklessly walked onto the cycle lane separated by a white line directly ahead of approaching bikes.

200 metres of asphalt

Now that the new cycle track was put to use, cyclists can use a lane which is not only even, but also clearly separated from the pavement. It was built in place of the former green square between a row of trees. Its construction cost around PLN 340 thousand.

”Our ultimate aim is to maintain such a standard on the entire route connecting the south of Wroclaw with the city centre”, admits Daniel Chojnacki, the bike officer of the Municipality of Wroclaw.

Bike infrastructure investments and plans

The lane that was put to use is one of the many tracks that will be opened to cyclists this year. Currently, bike lanes at ul. Na Polance and ul. Piaskowa are being reconstructed. A tender will be announced for a bike lane at ul. Legnicka from ul. Poznańska to ul. Rybacka and design documentation is under way for a passage under the Warszawski Bridge and for a route at ul. Oławska from the city moat to Pl. Społeczny.

"As soon as the documentation is ready, we will get down to work”, says Chojnacki.

It is also worth mentioning some investments aimed at improving safety in areas with a high frequency of accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists. At the intersections of ul. Białowieska and ul. Legnicka, of ul. Dobra and ul. Legnicka, and of ul. Wittiga and ul. Wróblewskiego, there are plans to elevate pedestrian and bike crossings above the road level, which means that drivers arriving at these places would have to slow down.
