More Foreigners Among Students

The most dynamically growing foreign students\' community is the one at Politechnika Wrocławska [Wrocław Technical University]. However, the most ethnically diverse one is of the University of Wrocław; it includes representatives of over 50 countries.

As many as 738 students were enrolled at the University of Wrocław in 2013 (in 2011 there were 697 of them, and in 2012 - 647), including 261 Ukrainians, the most numerous groups among foreign students. There are even single representatives of, among others, Pakistan, Bolivia, RSA and Sweden. A total of over 50 country representatives study at the University of Wrocław.

Wrocław Medical University has attracted, among others, people from New Zealand, Ghana, France and Great Britain, but also China and Azerbaijan. This year foreign students are predominantly Swedish, German and Norwegian, who just a year and two ago were preceded in numbers by the citizens of Saudi Arabia.

The Medical University educates also the greatest number of foreigners from all colleges in the city. English-language studies at the Medical Faculty are attended by 549 foreigners, and the other 105 aim for obtaining a dentist's degree.

As many as 499 people from outside of Poland commenced the academic year at Wrocław Technical University. Only in 2012 there were 370 foreigners with WTU's student books, and 420 a year ago.

More than half of foreigners in WTU's ranks are neighbours from outside the eastern border: Ukrainians (202) and Belarussians (56). 35 future engineers have Indian passports, and 25 students come from China. The most of them study IT (158), and significantly less numerous groups, of 30-54 people, have selected civil engineering, mechanics and machine construction, management, architecture and electronics.

The greatest number of young Ukrainians and Belarussians is also among 400 foreigners, who have chosen the Economic University as a place to study.

"We educate citizens of the UE member states, as well as those of the most remote corners of the world, e.g. Angola, USA, UAE, Turkey, Vietnam and China" informed Jolanta Nowacka, the spokesperson of the university.

In comparison to the previous year, ca. 100 students more commenced their studies at the college this year.

The Life Science University also attracts more and more student candidates from abroad. The new academic year was started by 166 students with foreign passports. And at this university too the Ukrainians comprise a numerous group, though comparable with Norwegians. The latter ones choose veterinarian studies taught in English (attended also by people from Canada and USA).

"66 people were admitted to the first year of studies this year, 45 of them as a part of "Teraz Wrocław" [Wrocław Now] programme, mainly from Ukraine" informs Małgorzata Wanke-Jakubowska, the spokesperson of the Life Science University. "Twenty of those new students are people with "Kartą Polaka" [The Pole Card], including ten from Ukraine, three from Russia and Germany, two from Czech Republic, and one from France, Denmark and Kazakhstan.

The report did not include the foreign participants of Erasmus+ scholarship programme.
