Mendini – Maestro del Design in Wroclaw

Works of famous architect and designer Aleksandro Mendini will be exhibited in the Museum of Architecture and the Neon Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts (ASP) in Wroclaw from the 3rd of December. The artist will be granted the title of doctor honoris causa, and the exhibition will be a part of the visual arts program of the European Capital of Culture 2016.

The Wroclaw exhibition will include sculptures, installations, architectural designs, designs for the industry, as well as unique works by the architect. During the opening of the exhibition, the model of an outdoor sculpture by Mendini to be created in the space of Wroclaw will be presented.

Installations, mosaics, Proust’s armchair

We will see, among others, a collection of works from Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris, which includes installations: Petite Cathedrale and Grande Poltrona di Proust, and the Cavaliere sculpture. The Groninger Museum designer by Atelier Mendini in the Netherlands will deliver Tete Gèante and a collection of laminates designed by Mendini for Abet Laminati. Apart from that, Mobili per Uomo – nine 2-metre sculptures from a mosaic in gold – from the collections of the Italian Fondazione Bisazza will be presented, and Mobile Venice will be brought from Cleto Munari’s private collection.

In the Museum of Architecture, you can also see several miniature bronze objects from the Short Stores collection, and the Superego collection will be represented by Colonne – ceramic sculptures being 2-metre colourful objects whose shape resembles anthropomorphic forms.

Atelier Mendini will make available a large collection of unique objects: the famous Poltrona Proust armchair in different variants, furniture from the Redesign series that revolutionised the world of design in the 1980s, a collection of pottery made with the use of celadon – a famous traditional Korean technique, a series of vases with papier mâché, a special community project being implemented in Rebbibbia – one of the larger prisons in Italy, a series of Proust items and objects, including the famous Oggetto Banale Proust and many other works by the master.

Huge lamps, vases and seats

We will also see architectural models created in various places around the world, such as the Groninger Museum project in the Netherlands, Torre in Hiroshima (Japan), the Alessi Factory in Italy and many others. In addition, around 60 photographs of completed architectural projects will be presented.

The Wroclaw exhibition will also be an opportunity to see sculptures designed for use in public space: lamps, vases and seats produced by Schoenhuber Franchi and Slide.

Bomarzo – 4-metre sculptures produced by Schoenhuber Franchi – will be shown in spaces and galleries of the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, whereas Here, There, Glace objects produced by Slide will be presented in the Museum of Architecture in Wroclaw.

Alessandro Mendini often acts as artistic director of numerous brands. In Wroclaw we will show results of this co-operation – projects for Alessi, Bisazza, Swatch, Venini, Abet Laminati, Magis, Olivari, Porro, Ramun, Swarovski, Zerodisegno and many others.

The Wroclaw exhibition will summarise many years of work of this great artist, but it will focus mainly on projects created during the last 10 years.

The event is organised by the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts, the Museum of Architecture in Wroclaw and the curator and artistic director Dorota Koziara – a designer, artist and long-term collaborator of Atelier Mendini and the owner of a studio in Milan for a few years, who comes from Lower Silesia.

The official opening ceremony of the MENDINI exhibition will take place in the Neon Gallery of ASP on the 2nd of December at 5:00 p.m. and in the Museum of Architecture on the 2nd of December at 6:00 p.m. The exhibition will be open from the 3rd of December till the 15th of March 2015.
