Let yourself go at one of 27 Wroclaw bridges. ECC Wroclaw 2016 project

27 bridges and footbridges are turning into a space to encourage artistic creativity next week. The bridges will be playing to the rhythm of love and will also be illuminated to connect both the residents of Wroclaw and Lower Silesia and encourage them to take part in artistic activity. This little guide is here for you to learn what's on on 20 June in Wroclaw.

  • Stary Mieszczański Bridge: "This Bridge Is a Gate"

1.00 p.m.-9.00 p.m.

Performance artists, actors, a period stage design and period costumes which are all brought together to tell a story about four turning points in the bridge's history: its construction (1867), the inter-war period, the 1950s and 1960s and the time when new Mieszczański Bridges were built (1997). All this is to showcase the evolution of the bridge to the residents of Nadodrze and Kępa Mieszczańska.

  • Złotnicka Footbridge: "Trees Are Dying Standing Up"

11.00 a.m.-4.00 p.m.

This bridge serves as a gate to a lush paradise of greenery, namely Złotnicki Park and the Bystrzyca Valley Landscape Park. The idea comes from the students of the European Union Middle School No.13, who wish to raise the awareness of the environment. As you leave the bridge you come across fruit hanging from the trees and may also listen to environmental songs and enjoy a live performance from a school rock band called Crossover.

  • Saint Anthony's Footbridge: "A Singing Bridge. The Sounds of Your Dreams and Memories.

  • Footbridge near the Opatowicka Sluice: "Hug"

12.00 p.m.-8.30 p.m.

This hydro-technical facility opens its gates to Karina Marusińska and her Hug project to raise awareness of the people on the fringes of society. Porcelain hand casts will be placed on the railings to help the audience engage in the project.

  • Wroclaw Stadium Car Park: The Wrocmile Cinema

10.30 p.m.-00.30 a.m.

Wroclaw has never had a real deal drive-in cinema, but this is going to change. The project kicks off on 20 June at the Wroclaw Stadium's car park. The stadium's membrane will be used to screen "Bridges" directed by Mateusz Kowalski.

  • Hatters' Footbridge (the vicinity of ul. Kazimierza Wielkiego, ul. Widok and Staromiejski Park)

3.00 p.m.-11.00 p.m.

The Hatters' Bridge is an original and invented name. This mobile bridge is going to connect ul. Kazimierza Wielkiego with ul. Widok and Szewska. A parade by young people from a variety of countries, including Poland, Russia, Ukraine, France or Turkey, is going to cross the bridge on their way to a family picnic featuring a workshop on the history of Wroclaw bridges. The project uses hats to both build bridges and connect people (150 pieces of such headgear will be distributed among volunteers).

  • Zwierzyniecki Bridge (Zwierzyniecki Bridge bus stop / Politechnika Wroclawska bus stop, C-13 Building/ Plac Społeczny by Poczta Główna / Rynek - Plac Gołębi): "Copy-Paste"

10.00 a.m.-12.00 a.m.

A hundred years ago, the builders of the Zwierzyniecki Bridge moved the construction 30 metres away from its original location. On Saturday 20 June, a 1one-to-four replica of the Zwierzyniecki Bridge (3 metres in width, 3 metres in heights and 15 metres in length) will be carrying people on the route between the Zwierzyniecki Bridge and ul. Oławska, exactly as it used to do in the past. A variety on intriguing attractions will be offered on the way.

  • Zwierzyniecka Footbridge: "Sound Lab"

2.00 p.m.-00.45 a.m.

Two radio dramas, for children and adults respectively. The former is entitled "A Tale of the Hedgehog Who Didn't Want to Be a Dung Beetle" while the latter is a detective story for adults and is called "Dybuk". All attractions are performed by the Wroclaw Radioactive Theatre. The footbridge is going to connect the city bustle with nature. A live show by Karbido starts at 9 p.m. while "Dybuk" kicks off at 10 p.m. and will continue for two and a half hours. The children's audience will be offered their tale in three separate renditions, the earliest of which starts at 3 p.m.

  • Sikorski Bridge: "A Bridge to San Sebastian"

9.00 a.m.-7.30 p.m.

A variation on Wroclaw and San Sebastian as they both take over as the European Capital of Culture 2016. They have at least several things in common. The artists representing eleven Wroclaw independent theatres are going to show that one of these things are people. The events takes you on a journey to San Sebastian featuring both gripping stories and catchy songs. The audience will also be offered to join in a food tasting and follow a spectacle about a love affair between a Basque and a Polish girl..

  • Trzebnicki Bridges: "Most(l)y"

5.00 p.m.-8.00 p.m.

These bridges link the Wroclaw Centre for Care and Education with the city centre, the link being key to the project created by children and young people brought together by a student from the Faculty of Theatre Directing at the Polish School for Dramatic Arts. The audience are given headphones to join in an audio walk to a secret garden.

  • Peace Bridge: "Pomrowa+Personalnie"

9.00 a.m.-10.00 p.m.

An exhibition hall on a bridge? Yes, it is possible, and this project brings a variety of exhibition pavilions redolent of creeping snails. They contain photographs, both amateur and professional, all of them in large formats, of Wroclaw's residents. A trip to the bridge serves as a necessary link to connect Wroclaw generations in a unique spot that offers a truly urban context and a great view on the majority of the city's landmarks.

  • Świdnickie Underpass: "A Farewell to Świdnickie Underpass"

4.00 p.m.-10.00 p.m.

From November 2014 to May 2015, a group of journalists, photographs and sound engineers registered the last moments in the Świdnickie Underpass's existence. Now they can brought to you a collection of photographs and stories about this legendary spot and also real sound recordings straight from the underpass, which are all blended together to create a story and a report rolled in one.

  • Park Szczytnicki Footbridge: "A Bird Stop"

11.00 a.m.-3.00 p.m.

This is something for children, a project designed by mums (from the exclusive Urban Wives Association) to be presented on an iron-cast bridge with plenty of local winged residents in the vicinity. With birds starring the main role, everything is going to be environmentally friendly. All of the participants will have a sneak peek to the Birds' Country, take part in singing and games, and even have their beaks and plumage examined by a special bird doctor. The Birds' Band will also be there.

  • Tumski Bridge: "The Rhythm of Your Heart"

between midnight on Saturday 20 June to midnight on Sunday 21 June)

Lock pads are not the only evidence that the Tumski Bridge is also the bridge of love. The authors of the multimedia performance "The Rhythm of Love" are now going to prove this (they are going to beat out the rhythm of the heart for 24 hours on the Great Drums of the Makata Theatre). The audience can join in a drumming workshop and sign on a special banner with the massage to love.

  • Nabycińska Footbridge: "On Off"

11.00 a.m.-6.00 p.m.

  • Engineers' Bridge and the vicinity: "Pomrowa+Personalnie"

12.00 p.m.-8.00 p.m.

This bridge in Kozanów's former training ground and military barracks area (where the local engineering unit used to be stationed) is a showcase of all things constructive rather than mere demolition. The project's focus is on building rapport with Opole, which is why 8 female visual artists are going to cover the historic water route joining the two cities as part of the Bridges programme. Kayak crews will float concrete bags necessary to build a bridge to culture between Wroclaw and Opole. The also offers a cementing workshop, location-based games and the Rap Szalet picnic in the park in ul. Połbina.

  • Witches' Bridge (Saint Mary Magdalene's Cathedaral): "Step by Step"

  • University Bridge: "Clutching at Books"

6.00 p.m.-11.00 p.m. (19 June)

The project to build a levee made of books kicks off on Friday 19 June. The initiative celebrates the residents of Wroclaw and their commitment to saving the University Library collection in 1997, when the city was devastated by a massive flood. Collected over the last few months, the books will be used to construct a bridge to connect the residents of Wroclaw, and after the structure's demolition they will be donated to charities.

  • Wyspa Słodowa"Utopian Wroclaw"

11.00 a.m.-6.00 p.m.

This fictional urban space is made entirely of plastic crates. The city features libraries, a concert hall, a museum and other cultural institutions. The idea comes from Wroclaw students, and the buildings will be developed for everyone to see the process. This utopian city is also shaped by its residents. Visitors can contribute to its final design. Balloons carrying wishes from the local residents into the sky conclude the entire event.

  • Footbridge in Plac Orląt Lwowskich

10.30 p.m.-11.00 p.m.

The fire, dance and acrobatics theatre from Legnica-based artists draws on the Via Regia, or the royal way, which leads from Spain to Ukraine and serves as a symbol of European unity. The script provides for a fight, great romantic love and the atmosphere of glee, which is a great way to connect a variety of cultures.

  • Bartoszowicki Bridge: "A Narrow Bridge, A Broad Culture"

10.00 a.m.-11.00 p.m. (20 June)

10.00 a.m.-6.00 p.m. (21 June) the bridge gallery's opening hours

The Bartoszowicki Bridge is no backwater. And the local community is going to prove this. They have been working on the project for five months now. On 20 June, Strachota the dragon enters the bridge. You're more than welcome if you wish to test yourself in a fight against the dragon (you can also later feel its texture afterwards). You can also join in a graffiti event (by volunteers), enjoy the music and taste new flavours.

  • Oławski Bridge: "Weingasse: A Bridge to the Country of Stone Houses and Wineries"

11.00 p.m.-1.00 a.m.

The Oławski Bridge was the first to be crossed by an electric tram in Wroclaw, and it also used to provide a convenient connection to people heading to the Lobe Theatre. On Saturday 20 June, the bridge will be illuminated with 1000 candles, which is preceded by a pottery and a creative writing workshop and a photographic exhibition.

  • Osobowicki Bridge: "Coal Odyssey"

4.00 p.m.-9.30 p.m.

"Coal Odyssey" brings a picnic full of attractions, a sound and dance spectacle about miners and a meeting with miners from Lower Silesia. The spectacle, which starts at 6.30 p.m., is for everyone to see on large outdoor screens: both to those who can stop for a moment, drive by or travel by tram. The event's focus is on coal because the Różanka sluice used to handle barges full of coal. The attractions include a folk ensemble and a miners' orchestra.

  • Wroclaw Stadium Footbridge: "WrocMost Atelier"

11.00 a.m.-5.30 p.m.

With the Fundaja EKOpotencjał offering upcycling, handicraft and clay sculpting workshops, the Wroclaw Stadium Footbridge is going to focus on all things organic on Saturday 20 June. The location has been selected to showcase something different, not just a regular bridge.

  • Wyspa Piasek: "On to the Bridge. A Portrait of the Generation"

8.00 a.m.-7.00 p.m.

Wyspa Piaskowa offers a special camera obscura, which is just great news for avid photographers. The idea is to take wet collodion photos of ten different multigeneration families from Wroclaw and Lower Silesia and to showcase the technique popular at the end of the 19th century (photos were taken by an ambrotypist who after several seconds of exposure would record the final effect on glass). The special design of this camera obscura allows the viewers to have a sneak peek into the contraption and follow the process of taking unique ambrotype photographs.

  • Saint Clara's Bridge: "Green Project"

from 10 a.m. (20 June) to 7 p.m. (21 June)

Greenery is the lungs of our town, and Saint Clara's Bridge is going to showcase the stark contrast between lush foliage and urban concrete. Each of the participants can change the bridge a little (you can join in the project and tend to the seedlings which are to be planted on 20 June). The idea for this green and leafy project comes from landscape designer Paweł Mieszkalski.

  • Grunwaldzki Bridge: "Dream Fusion"

10.30 p.m.-1.30 a.m.

This project is going to illuminate the Grunwaldzki Bridge as a gift to the third edition of the PKO Night Half Marathon. The light and sound extravaganza at this most distinctive of all Wroclaw bridges starts at 10 p.m. The audience may enjoy the spectacle from the new University Library area.
