Workers working in the Market Square began the joint filling (filling of holes between cobblestones with cement mortar) of the first half of the modernised section of the eastern frontage. Before this stage of work was started, however, the evenness of the laid section was measured accurately and with high precision and a technological check was performed. A large tent has also appeared over the building site. "Spread over the work area and heated during night hours by means of heating coils, it ensures temperatures above 0°C all the time. This is particularly important because of the risk of frost penetration of the mortar, which in turn affects its properties and durability," explains Ewa Mazur, the spokesperson for the Wroclaw Administration of Roads and City Maintenance.
The new pavement is made of specially processed (cut, ground) granite cobblestone. Tight arrangement, regular shape, straight edges, narrow and mortar-filled holes will help to obtain an even surface that does not give the effect of terrace or bathroom terracotta, but of stone floor harmonised with the medieval plate of the Market Square.
"The selected technology of replacement of the pavement of the Market Square is the result of consultations carried out in 2012 with circles of disabled persons (e.g., Bartłomiej Skrzyński – the spokesperson for disabled persons, the 'Your New Possibilities' Association or the Disabled Supporters’ Club), whose representatives made a request for adapting the frontage to the needs of physically less able and disabled persons," says Ewa Mazur. The second section in this fragment of the eastern frontage (the one situated closer to the intersection of ul. Wita Stwosza and ul. Kuźnicza) is prepared for joint filling, too. These works should be carried out already this week. Building teams perform their work very precisely. The first tests of the new pavement and the opening of the modernised fragment will probably be carried out next week. Then the workers will move to another section of works from Kurzy Targ to ul. Świdnicka.
