You can also join "The Awakening", four simultaneous parades that bring the European Capital of Culture Opening to a climax. They will set out for Rynek from four different districts of the city on 17 January at 4 pm and are expected to reach their destination at 6 pm. All you need is a bell and warm clothing!

"You can join any of the parades at any given moment, but I would strongly encourage you to be with us from the very start," says Chris Baldwin, ECC Performance Curator and the director of "The Awakening".

"The Awakening" Ceremony starts on Sunday 17 January, at 4 pm. Four parades led by Spirits of Innovation, Restoration, the Flood and Religious Diversity will set out for Rynek from four different places: the tram depot at Dąbie, bus depot in ul Grabiszyńska, "Popowice" depot and the Tadeusz Kościuszko Land Forces Military Academy in ul Czajkowskiego. In order to help you join in, capes in colours matching each parade will be distributed on its route.

The weather forecast for Sunday says it is going to be freezing. The temperature will drop below zero.

Maps (in Polish, English and German) are available at www.wroclaw2016.pl/weekendotwarcia, the Barbara ECC Opening Weekend Centre in ul Świdnicka 8c, 15 information points in Rynke ("Wroclaw Warms Up") and all "Wroclaw Sounds" locations. The maps are also available at restaurants, pubs and cafés. The first issue of the ECC Wroclaw 2016 quarterly will be available at the same locations. You can use the map to check event locations and the routes of the parades.

You are strongly encouraged to take a bell with you to the parade. "We are launching the parade to awaken Europe. Join us on Sunday. We want to encourage more people to take an active part in culture," says ECC Wroclaw 2016 Director General Krzysztof Maj.

How to enter Rynek during "The Awakening"

A spectacular finale involving a crowd of several thousand spectators will begin when the parades meet at 6.30 pm in Rynek. Just like for New Year's Eve celebrations, a fenced off area for the event will be provided in Rynek.

Entries in three different locations will be open from 4pm:

ul Mikołaja - ul Odrzańska,
ul Świdnicka - ul Oławska
ul Kuźnicza - ul Wita Stwosza

A special area for persons with disabilities will be provided near the stage.

LED displays to watch "The Awakening"

Special LED displays will be mounted in 7 different locations around Rynek for you to watch the finale:

in the square by the Garrison Church,
in the square by the NFM,
in the square at the intersection of ul Kotlarska and Kuźnicza,
in Plac Nowy Targ, in ul Świdnicka near the entry to Rynek,
in the square by Saint Mary Magdalene's Church ,
in Plac Solny

The celebrations will also be screened on the elevations of the buildings.

Fight off cold

Join our "Wroclaw Warms Up" information points scattered in 15 locations around Rynek to have a sip of hot tea, admire local artists and collect your Opening Weeken programme. Our volunteers in blue hats and white jackets are there to help you.
