Guests and stars at 14. T-Mobile New Horizons IFF

Although they hardly ever shine on the red carpet, they create the history of the cinema. 14. T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival in Wroclaw gives you the chance to meet both the legends of the cinema and young and unknown artists that have just embarked on their adventure as actors or directors. The festival will be held from 24 July from 3 August.

Erdem, Lanzmann, Palfi, Doillon, Girardet and Müller, Gitai, Archive have been invited to take part in 14. T-Mobile New Horizons International Film Festival. This gives you the chance to meet Anka and Wilhelm Sasnal and Grzegorz Jarzyna as well as writers and journalists such as Ziemowit Szczerek, Jacek Hugo-Bader and Magdalena Grzebałkowska.

Q&As with artists in a bookshop and a hotel

Q&As will be held at the cinema after the screenings and at Gazeta Cafe in the yard of the Hotel Puro on ul Włodkowica. The audience will be able to use the Festival Library organised by the Book Institute in collaboration with the Third Programme of Polish Radio and the New Horizons Association. This year, the festival audience will be able to while away their time in between the screenings with a book from the library that will operate at the Nowe Horyzonty Cinema from 25 July to 3 August from 10 am to 8 pm. The library's activity will also involve Q&As with the artists (29,30,31 July at 7 pm). Meetings with Ziemowit Szczerek, Jacek Hugo-Bader and Magdalena Grzebałkowska will be held at Księgarnia Hiszpańska at ul Szajnochy 5. The meetings will be hosted by Michał Nogaś (Third Programme of Polish Radio) and Szymon Kloska (Book Institute).

Stars of the festival

The festival will also feature a meeting with Claude Lanzmann, an eminent French director, writer and journalist, the author of the legendary "Shoah", which is considered the most prominent cinematic work on the Holocaust. The 88-year-old director returns to his documentary series with the film "The Last of the Unjust". A Newsweek-sponsored Q&A with the director will be held after the screening on 30 July (screening starts at 3:45 pm, KNH 3).

Reha Erdem, one of the most intriguing contemporary Turkish artists will visit Wroclaw to present his latest film "Singing Women" and will meet with the audience during a master class meeting held on 26 July at 3:45 pm, KNH 3.

Wojciech Bąkowski, one of the most original and expressive contemporary Polish visual artists, who also deals in video art, poetry, music and performance art and will be a juror of the Films About Art International Competition: his work will be available for review (you can see his films on 28 July at 4 pm at KNH5). You can also enjoy the art of the avant-garde artistic duo who made their names with the found footage technique. Christoph Girardet and Matthias Müller will act both as festival guests and jury members of the European Short Film Competition. A fabulous compilation of their films will be on view 26 and 29 July at 1 pm at KNH6..

You should also meet one of the best Hungarian directors, György Pálfi, whose latest film, Free Fall, received the Prize for the Best Director at the Karlove Vary Film Festival. The Q&A as part of Gazeta Cafe will be held on 29 July at 6 pm.

The section curator Ariel Schweitzer of Cahiers du Cinéma and the eminent French director Jacques Doillon, an eminent French director and the author of two lauded films in the section (Touched in the Head and Family Life) will discuss the Post New Wave.

Guests from Israel, Greece and Poland

The festival is honoured to host one of the best modern Israeli directors, Amos Gitai (his latest film, Ana Arabia, is in the festival's programme), Adan Jodorowsky, the son of the master of cinematic surrealism, Lou Ye, one of the most interesting modern Chinese directors (Q&A with the author of Suzhou and, his latest, Blind Massage at Gazeta Cafe on July 28 at 7 PM), American David Zellner (Kumiko), Belgian documentary and experimental film-maker, Boris Lehman (My Seven Places), German actress Susanne Sachse (daring role in Pierrot Lunaire), representatives of the Greek New Wave (Michalis Konstantatos, Filippos Tsisos), Michael Bradsell, who is best known as Ken Russell’s editor (Mahler, The Devils), or film-makers whose films are being shown in the Third Eye section: Communes - Jason Osder, Nadine Mundo and Paul-Julien Robert).

Polish guests will include Anka and Wilhelm Sasnal (Parasite), Przemysław Wojcieszek (How to Disappear Completely), Marcin Dudziak (Calling), Karol Radziszewski (The Prince), Zuzanna Solakiewicz (15 Corners of the World), Grzegorz Jarzyna along with the cast of ”No Matter How Hard We Tried”, Jan P. Matuszyński (Deep Love) and Izabella Gustowska (juror and author of The Case of Josephine H.). The excellent Polish cinematographer Wojciech Staroń, who shot Witness Protection, and the actress Agnieszka Podsiadlik, who stars in several première projects such as How to Disappear Completely, No Matter How Hard We Tried, The Prince, were also invited.

Festival competition

Guests invited to take part in the T-Mobile New Horizons Festival also include the authors of other films from the New Horizons International Competition and the Films About Art International Competition: Josephine Decker (Butter on the Latch), Noaz Deshe (White Shadow), Luis Miñarro (Falling Star), Peter Brunner (My Blind Heart), Lorenz Merz (Cherry Pie), Aaron Wilson (Canopy), Benjamin Naishtat (History of Fear), Marianne Pistone and Gilles Deroo (Mouton), Anna Odell (The Reunion), Jordi Morató (The Creator of the Jungle), Lily Benson and Cassandra Guan (Mamadada Filmballada), Tadgh O'Sullivan and Feargal Ward (Yximalloo), Julie Perron(The Sower).

The leading members of the British band Archive, Darius Keeler and Daniel Griffiths, will hold a Q&A with the festival audience after the screening of their Axiom, and on 28 July at midnight they will appear in the Festival Club to mix the material from their latest album.
