It is already a part of Wroclaw tradition: every year the city commemorates Eugeniusz Get-Stankiewicz - its Honorary Citizen and an outstanding graphic artist and sculpturer, who died in 2011 - by recollecting his outstanding personality and works on the anniversary of the artist’s birth (as in the previous year).

On the 14th of May this year, an exhibition of souvenirs of Get purchased or deposited by Marek Stanielewicz, the custodian of Engraver’s House, was opened. During the meeting near Engraver's House on the anniversary of Get's birth, the Deputy Mayor of Wroclaw Adam Grehl referred to this event as to a part of the beautiful Wroclaw tradition honouring the memory of the excellent artist. ‘He is important for Wroclaw and plays a significant role in our activities connected with the European Capital of Culture 2016. But he is also important every day, because Engraver’s House is popular both among Wroclaw inhabitants and tourists. Every exhibition, every event and all workshops that are held there maintain the spirit of this place, according to the idea that the power of Wroclaw lies in its inhabitants, including wonderful artists,’ stressed Grehl.

Get - genius loci

Eugeniusz Get-Stankiewicz lived and worked in the Jaś tenement house from 1995, when he obtained the perpetual lease of this historic place from the city – he renovated it by himself and set up his workshop there; since then, it has been called Engraver’s House. It is also the place where many works and personal souvenirs of the artist, as well as peculiar 'institutions' founded by him, are kept.

‘Before his death, Get gave his works to various institutions: the National Museum, the Ossolineum, the Academy of Fine Arts,’ says Marek Stanielewicz, the current custodian of Engraver’s House. ‘When I came to the House,

I found virtually nothing on the walls. Thanks to my co-operation with Janusz Stankiewicz [Get>>'<>'<< adds Stanielewicz. In this way, the custodian acquires various Get>>'<>'<<, which was opened on the 14th of May, is an assemblage of works by this outstanding graphic and poster artist and sculptor. They were borrowed, among others, from Krzysztof Albin, Jerzy Andrzejewski, Tadeusz Kuranda, Janusz Stankiewicz, Ewa Milewska, Donata Górka and Zbigniew Hirsch. Marek Stanielewicz has also made his contribution to the exhibition (for example, he brought one of Get's famous tapestries from his own kitchen). Part of these works will hang on the walls of the House on a permanent basis. ‘If I can afford this and prices are "normal", I buy Get>>'<>'<< says Stanielewicz. ‘Get on deposit>>'<< presents the artist>>'<>'<>'<>'<>'<< says Broda. ‘Apart from that, we are planning a huge exhibition of posters by Get-Stankiewicz, which will be accompanied by a full professional catalogue - it should be opened next year,>>'<< he adds. Engraver>>'<>'<>'<>'<< [Do It Yourself], consisting of a hammer, a nail, a cross and a figure of Christ, was embedded in the House on the side of St. Elizabeth’s Church. However, Marek Stanielewicz stresses that Engraver’s House is not only a memorial room. The engraver’s former workshop is a place where a series of interesting things and artistically valuable events has been going on for a long time. ‘We change exhibitions every month, and classes in the field of graphic design and graphic techniques for students of the Academy of Fine Arts take place here. We also organise etching and engraving courses - the latest one was held in May this year. Apart from that, the House offers study visits – in a couple of days, Stasia Sokołowska, an artist from Belarus, will arrive here to work on her graphic designs,’ says Stanielewicz.

You can also watch the custodian showing visitors round the House and telling its history - see here.
