ECC 2016: Lublin in the centre of Wroclaw

The climate of magical Lublin can be felt in Wroclaw already from Wednesday. For five days – from 25th till 29th May – conjurers, actors, musicians and performers will perform at ul. Szajnochy and in the house at Rynek 25. Altogether, 60 cultural events will be presented within the first Coalition of Cities for Culture.

The Coalition was established by cities that applied for the title of the European Capital of Culture 2016. The winner of this title – Wroclaw – invited its competitors to co-operate. The aim of the Coalition is to exchange experiences and to stimulate the activity of local government, artistic and non-governmental circles. Apart from Lublin, also Gdańsk, Katowice, Łódź, Poznań and Szczecin will present their cultural heritage, showing their most characteristic and outstanding features.

‘We have chosen the street, because we have worked out the method of existence of artistic events in public space in Lublin. We moved from galleries, auditoriums and concert halls to streets, squares and backyards to show art. Rich in these skills and convinced of the strength and sense of this idea, we would like the greatest and most well-known artists of our city to build an impression of Lublin at ul. Szajnochy in Wroclaw – an image of the City of Inspirations where modernity intertwines with rich history,’ say the organisers.

Conjurers from Lublin

The presentation of Lublin is a few days’ show devoted both the past and traditions of the city and its modernity. Inhabitants of Wroclaw will have an opportunity to feel the unusual atmosphere of Lublin by becoming a part of ‘Dream of a City’ – a skyward show prepared specially on that occasion. Thanks to scenographic towers and lines and bands suspended over the street, they will move to the past. The author of the show is the theatrical director Janusz Opryński. During the show, the drawing artist Mariusz Tarkawian from Lublin will undertake the task of creating a unique drawing on the wall of a Wroclaw tenement house.

Another director who will share his theatrical world is Łukasz Witt-Michałowski. His show ‘Zły’ [Bad] tells an authentic story of a former criminal, who changed his life and became an actor thanks to his contact with art. The director will also invite us to the performative reading of ‘Pogrom w przyszły wtorek>>'<< [Slaughter in Next Week>>'<

Sounds from Lublin

The organisers did not forget about music fans – they have prepared the premiere of the Lublin Street Band project. Its guiding idea was to create a street orchestra consisting of the best Lublin musicians who will thrill the crowds with its positive dose of jazz & bebop energy. Wild improvisations, processions and flash mobs will conquer the centre of Wroclaw.

Another exceptional event is the Tatvamasi and Ladies Quartet project. It is an unusual combination of extremely distant musical sounds, e.g., a string quartet and progressive rock. The project will include Tatvamasi’s new pieces in arrangements featuring Ladies Quartet that have been prepared specially for the Wroclaw inhabitants.

During the five days of presentations at ul. Szajnochy, we will also listen to representatives of music inspired by traditional culture, who will present it in a new contemporary context: Orkiestra św. Mikołaja, Čači Vorba, Dziadowski Projekt, the jazz band Sekta Denta, the poetic Lubelska Federacja Bardów and the best DJ’s from Lublin.

In connection with this event, the ul. Karola Szajnochy street will be excluded from road traffic from 20th till 29th May.
