"He was a colourful and intriguing figure, a witty man with the gift of the gab. You could listen to him for hours as he continued his monologues," said Tadeusz Nestorowicz. Tadeusz Nestorowicz and his band opened Friday's meeting at the Chalcographer's House. "Get liked jazz, Louis Armstrong in particular, which is why we played his song," he adds.
Eugeniusz Get-Stankiewicz was born in Ashmyany, today's Lithuania, but he spent his entire adult life in Wroclaw. He created prints, illustrations and posters promoting musical festivals, theatre and opera performances and Stage Songs Review. His ideas were provocative, and his major works include the sculpture "Do It Yourself" (on the northern wall of the House) and the Plaque in Memory of Simple Number Operations (in Jatki). In 1995 he moved in to the Jaś House in the North-Eastern corner of the Market Square, where he also had his studio. He died in the spring of 2011. "The Chalcographer's House is now operating in accordance with Get's last will and testament. The house serves as an exhibition space, and it also provides accommodation to artists in residence and a teaching centre for students in graphic art," the Chalcographer's House Custodian Mariusz Stanielewicz. Some of the guests invited to Get-Stankiewicz's birthday were: Mayor of Wroclaw Rafał Dutkiewicz, Wroclaw-based artists, journalists, art enthusiasts and Get's friends. Tadeusz Nesterowicz played Wroclaw's anthem on his trumpet, the sculptor Lev Stern presented his work depicting Stankiewicz's figure, and Andrzej Dudek Dürer appeared in a performance devoted to the eminent graphic artist.
The participants were also offered a visit at the Chalcographer's House, where they were served a cake in the shape of a townhouse.
