Berlin – Wroclaw: the Culture Train

The first train from Berlin in nearly four years will arrive in Wroclaw on Saturday, April 30. It will be a special express, which bring tourists from Germany for a weekend of events of the European Capital of Culture Wroclaw 2016.

'The first passengers will set their foot at the Wroclaw Main Station at 1.03 pm. We are committed to restoring a permanent railway connection between Berlin and southern Poland,' says Grzegorz Roman, adviser to the mayor of Wroclaw for transport. 'And this is one good way to facilitate it.

The Berlin - Wroclaw connection will take the fastest, pre-World War II route, with stops in Żary and Żagan. The journey will last four and a half hours. The train will consist of three German compact cars, which will accommodate 420 passengers. The train will run until the end of September. The ticket costs 19 euro one way. The train leaves Berlin at 8.21 am, and arrives in Wroclaw at 1.03 pm, leaving for Berlin at 4.30 pm and arriving at the destination after midnight.

"The train is financed by the federal states of Brandenburg and Berlin, and the tour operator is Lower Silesia Railways. The project's total cost is 300 000 euro. The German party allocated 200 000 euro to the project, and Wroclaw 30 000 euro. The missing 70 000 will come from the German partner,' says Grzegorz Roman.

Material about the ECC events in Wroclaw in German will be available on the train, and the catering will be based on Lower Silesia products.

'The first 420 tickets sold very quickly,' says Grzegorz Roman.

'German tourists are interested in the events of the ECC,' says Arkadiusz Foerster, spokesman of Wroclaw 2016. 'Many events are also associated with Germany, such as Project Telescope, which allows taking a peek in Wroclaw in real time, or the stay of the resident writer Marko Martin.

Tourists who take the 'Culture Train' will have the opportunity to use the public transport for free (presenting their train ticket) and the city bike system.
