Amateur Cinema Days in April

Some filmmakers says that there is Hollywood and the rest of the world. The Film Producers’ Club in Wroclaw proves that it does not matter where, how and about what films are made. It is important to encourage talented amateurs and present their works to a wider audience. An opportunity will occur soon – Amateur Cinema Days will take place from the 29th till the 30th of April.

Something for cat lovers

Those who love cats should perk up their ears, because they can film their pets (a film must not be longer than 2 minutes) by means of any technique (e.g. mobile phone or camera). This competition is a chance for those who love watching displays of animals’ skills from various parts of the world on Youtube.com and have also noticed funny or strange behaviours of their pets. The rules of the competition are available here, and the deadline for the submission of films is the 10th of April.

Al Paczino in action

The organisers filled up both days to the brims. At the beginning, a film setting workshop will be held in Krzywy Komin (the 29th of April at noon), then the official opening ceremony of Amateur Cinema Days, a screening of prizewinning films from the "Kręć koty" ("Filming Cats") cycle and a discussion on amateur cinema in Poland will take place in Bar Vega (at 4:00 p.m.). Shortly before the evening (at 6:00 p.m.), there will be a screening of films from the Film Producers’ Club in Sanatorium Kultury. It will be an opportunity to see films such as "Wieśniacka krew" ("Peasant’s Blood") produced by LoboTomia Video company and "Do żony" ("To The Wife") directed by Al Paczino. You can attend all of these events for free.

On the second day, there will be two screenings – both will take place in the room of the former Atom cinema in the building of NOT. On that day, the atmosphere of old days will return – like many years ago, you can sit on wooden chairs that were usually uncomfortable for your back, but seats, creaking stairs and a loudly operating projector created the climate of old cinema. On Thursday the 30th of April, you can watch a retrospective by Janina Matejuk (at 5:00 p.m.) and a premiere show of the most recent amateur films made by Wroclaw and Lower Silesian authors (at 7:00 p.m.) in this magical place and then go to an afterparty in Sanatorium Kultury (11:00 p.m.).

An old woman buys a camera

Janina Matejuk is a very interesting person – while being in her sixties (although referring to a woman’s age is considered to be irrelevant), she breaks age-related stereotypes. In the 1980s, she shot amateur films and short film exercises on a 16 mm tape (on topics such as the experiences of a woman during the martial law period) and then she had a long break. She has returned to her hobby only recently. In order to be up to date with current trends, she bought a computer and a digital camera, learned editing techniques and shot an excellent film "Dziwny jest ten świat" ("Strange is this world") about the life of a 70-year-old man who leads a very busy life in spite of bringing up an autistic son. Today Janina Matejuk is planning to make a feature film and to buy a new better camera.
