14. Nowe Horyzonty Film Festival [PROGRAMME]

It is the 14th time that all eyes will be turned to excellent film productions. This year's festival at Kino Nowe Horyzonty and the Market Square will feature a total of 365 films.

"This year is a breakthrough. We have never presented as many premières as this year, and as many as five films will have their world début at the festival! Since directors want to present their creations to the world right here, it is a proof that this festival is an important event" - admits Roman Gutek, the director of the festival.

The festival's menu

The grand film feast will be inaugurated by three productions: Damian Szifron's "Winter Sleep", awarded the Golden Palm in Cannes , and "Sils Maria", by one of the most interesting contemporary director, Olivier Assayas. This year the Nowe Horyzonty Festival will feature as many as 20 productions from Cannes, which is this event's all time record.

As every year, the productions will compete in several contests - the International Contest Nowe Horyzonty, the International Art Film Contest, the Panorama. This year's novelties are two sections - Ale kino +, in which presented will be the works of renowned directors, the world cinema masters, acknowledged at international festivals, as well as Powiększenie, i.e. the presentation of film masterpieces by Wrocław directors.

As becomes a serious film festival, there will also be a retrospective of a great artist's oeuvre, this time featuring Ken Russel. We will see some rare documentaries made for BBC, cult music films, such as "Mahler" or "Lisztomania", as well as the director's most famous works: "The Devils", "Women In Love" and "Altered States". Of course, this is not the end of works by great cinema artists. The festival's highlight will also be a review of the oeuvre of an avant guard artistic duo - Christoph Girardet and Matthias Muller, as well as that of Wojciech Bąkowski, an author of experimental films, graphics designer and performer. The programme includes also films of directors who have recently passed away. This is how a tribute will be paid to artists such as Alain Resnais, Vera Chytilova, Miklós Jancsó and Edward Żebrowski. A very interesting part of the event will be an overview of one of the most interesting contemporary cinematographies, i.e. the new Greek cinema.

Additionally, there will also be music films, dedicated to icons of world music. You can anticipate such projections as: "20 000 Days On Earth", telling the story of Nick Cave, "Pulp: a Film about Life, Death & Supermarkets" about the legend of britpop, "Bjork: Biophilia Live", "Super Duper Alice Cooper" about the forerunner of heavy metal, and last but not least, "Peter Gabriel: Back to Front", i.e. a film documenting a spectacular concert of the star at London's O2 Arena, as well as a film project "Axiom" on the British group, Archive.

Not only film

The festival is obviously not only about films. During festival days guests can participate in literary meetings, rent books from the festival library, watch performances of the Ad Spectatores theatre, see an exhibition of theatre and film posters, take part in artistic events in galleries entitled "Good Morning" as well as "Midnight Show II", and finally relax and have some fun in the festival club, the Arsenal.

Ticket sale will start on July 9th at 12:00.
